Like millions of people worldwide today, you may be overweight and searching for a diet that works. Your probably asking yourself, “How can I lose weight and keep it off?”
If you are asking yourself this question, you probably want a an answer that isn’t going to break the bank. There are many expensive diet plans on the market today, but do you really need them?
So what do you do? Well with a bit of willpower, you can make a simple lifestyle change that will make the difference.
The best way to start is to add up all the calories you eat in a week. Take a few minutes to look at an average day. An example might be:
One typical day of eating:
Breakfast: Flavored coffee from Dunkin Donuts with cream and sugar (medium size: about 330 calories). Blueberry muffin (also from Dunkin’s: 510 calories).
Lunch: A tuna salad sandwich with lettuce (about 680 calories). Single serving bag of Lays Classic Potato Chips (150 calories). A medium sized pickle (10 calories). Can of Coke (150 calories).
Afternoon snack: Single serving package of plain M&Ms (240 calories).
Dinner: Piece of lasagna (Stouffer’s 1 serving: 350 calories) with two pieces of garlic bread (Pepperidge Farm 2 1/2″ slice x 2: 340 calories) and a glass of soda (8oz: approx. 100 calories).
Evening snack: King size Snickers candy bar (440 calories).
On the surface, this diet doesn’t seem excessive, but do the math and you’ll be surprised - 3,300 calories for one day! Now multiply that by the seven days in the week and you looking at a caloric intake of 23,100!
Most experts agree that 3,500 calories equates to one pound of fat. So by eating 3,500 calories more than your body requires, you will gain a pound. If, on the other hand you can remove 3,500 calories from you diet you will lose a pound.
Now what you want to do is this: Calculate your calories per week just as this example shows. Once that is done, look for easy places to cut 3,500 calories. With the diet above, 3 small changes will do the job.
1) Substitute water for Coca Cola at lunch.
2 - Avoid having the afternoon snack of M&Ms.
3 - Instead of two slices of garlic bread with dinner, have just one.
Just these three tiny changes are enough to do the trick. With them you can eliminate 560 calories from the number you consume in a day. Now that figures to 3,920 over the course of one week which is enough to lose 1 pound. After one year, you will be nearly 52 pounds lighter! And this is done with NO EXERCISE!
Obviously, this is just an example and your own diet will vary. But give this a try and you’ll be amazed by the results. After just a few weeks, you will start to see the weight coming off like clockwork and this will be all the inspiration you will need to maintain your new, healthier diet. Always remember, small changes can make a big difference!
